Where do supernovae explode in galaxies? Turns out, core-collapse supernovae track the star formation main sequence, and are preferrentially located in star-forming regions of galaxies. Type Ia supernovae are found in quiescent regions of galaxies and explode in both star-forming and “red-and-dead” galaxies. This was a fun first research project that culminated in my undergraduate thesis.

What is the physical state of ionized gas in galactic winds? In NGC 253, a prototypical starburst with a galactic wind, we found that the ionized gas is approaching speeds of 500 km/s, dominated by shock ionization, and is the product of a mere 2% starburst efficiency. This was my first project in graduate school, and culminated in the equivalent of my Master’s thesis.

How do the smallest dust grains survive galactic winds? We find evidence for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons being shielded by cool clouds as they are entrained in M82’s wind. This tells us that cool material may be able to survive all the way out to galaxy halos.
